If you are drawn to something truly wild and steeped in legend, then the noble title Laird of John O’Groats is the perfect choice.
This title embodies exactly that spirit. The place of the same name lies in the far northeast of Scotland and marks the northernmost point of the British mainland. From here, ferries depart for the Orkney Islands, home to the famous prehistoric settlement of Skara Brae. A Laird of John O’Groats is, therefore, a true Highlander—his Lady a proud Highlander as well—both moving with dignity and strength through the rugged, windswept landscapes. By acquiring this title, you represent not only a resilient clan, but also a clever one, as the following story illustrates.
Interestingly, the name John O’Groats does not originate from ancient Scottish or Celtic roots, but rather from Dutch origins. A Dutchman named Jan de Groot settled here with a group of compatriots at the request of King James IV of Scotland. Only a few years earlier, the Orkney Islands had passed from Norwegian to Scottish control under King James II. To establish a reliable ferry connection to these islands, King James entrusted this task to the Dutch settlers, who proved well-suited to the role. They adapted quickly to life in the Highlands, operated the ferry service, and formed their own clan, celebrating their arrival each year with a grand festival.
Over time, the de Groot family became deeply integrated into Scottish culture—and, according to legend, also adopted the famous Highland spirit. During one such celebration, a dispute arose among the seven descendants of Jan de Groot over who should become the next clan leader. To prevent a potentially violent conflict, the clan head devised a clever solution. He declared that the successor would be the one seated at the head of the table. He then built a house with eight sides and eight doors, placing an octagonal table at its center. Each family member entered through a different door and took a seat—so that no one sat at the head of the table, and no one could claim dominance.
This wise and diplomatic act is considered worthy of a true Laird of John O’Groats, even if the story may have been embellished over time. In honor of this legend, the John O’Groats Hotel features an octagonal tower. By acquiring land and a noble title here, you become part of this unique and fascinating story—one that blends history, myth, and the enduring spirit of the Scottish Highlands.
