Family history Baron de Longueuil

The Barons de Longueuil – A family between two worlds

The history of Longueuil began with Charles Le Moyne, who was born in Dieppe in 1626 and came to New France in 1641. As a soldier, interpreter, and merchant, he made a name for himself in Montréal. In 1657, on the south bank of the Saint-Lawrence River, he received the seigneurie of Longueuil, which he developed with his wife Catherine Thierry dit Primot. Their numerous children founded one of the most famous families in New France; several sons became officers, explorers, governors, and founders.

The eldest son Charles, born in 1656 in Montreal, received military training in France. Back in Canada, he proved himself an officer and a skilled mediator with the Haudenosaunee people. At the same time, he built Longueuil: a stone fortress protected by four towers, residential buildings and a church gave the settlement an unusual splendor and security to its neighbors. King Louis XIV honored these achievements on January 26, 1700, and elevated Longueuil to hereditary baronage.

The first Baron became Governor of Trois-Rivières, then of Montreal and led the administration of New France for a time in 1725. His son Charles, the second Baron, continued the military and administrative tradition. He commanded Fort Niagara, became a Knight of the Order of Saint Louis and also became Governor of Montreal. After him came Charles-Jacques, the third Baron.

His daughter Marie-Charles-Joseph, born posthumously in 1756, inherited the Seigneurie and titles. Through her marriage to the Scot-born David Alexander Grant, French-Canadian and British family traditions were intertwined. Even after Canada’s political transition and the abolition of the Seigneurial system in 1854, the memory of the Seigneurie remained alive. In 1880, Queen Victoria officially recognized Charles Colmore Grant as the seventh Baron de Longueuil. Thus, the lineage of the title continues through the Grant family to the present day – as an extraordinary bridge between France, Quebec and Great Britain.

Family coat of arms Baron de Longueuil

Historical coat of arms of Charles Le Moynes, the founder of the Longueuil house.

In blue are three golden roses, placed in pairs; under a red shieldhead is a golden crescent between two golden stars.

The city of Longueuil and the Canadian Heraldic Authority attribute this Wappenform to Charles Le Moyne, who was knighted in 1668. His namesake son was elevated to the title of Baron de Longueuil in 1700.
