Family history Barone di Carini
The Barons of Carini – A Sicilian Castle and its Dynasty
Above the plain west of Palermo stands Carini Castle. Under the Normans, Count Roger granted the baronage in 1072 to the knight Rodolfo Bonello, who expanded an older fortification into a fortress. Later, the families Abbate and Chiaramonte ruled. King Martin I of Sicily opened the longest section in 1397.
At that time, Ubertino La Grua, a royal official from a Pisan merchant family, received Carini with rights and income. His daughter Ilaria married the Catalan noble Gispert Talamanca. He took the name and Coat of arms the surname La Grua; thus the house of La Grua Talamanca was established, which Carini would follow for four centuries.
The barons gradually transformed Wehrburg into an elegant residence. In the late 15th century, a ballroom, a coffered ceiling in the Gothic-Catalan style, and living rooms were built, which Coat of arms show the family’s marital connections. Pietro La Grua was considered a wise administrator and friend of arms and studies in the early 16th century.
The most well-known and at the same time tragic chapter is associated with Vincenzo II. His wife Laura Lanza was killed in the castle by her father Cesare Lanza in 1563. Folk poetry and later narratives made this the legend of the „Baronessa di Carini“. Vincenzo himself subsequently promoted the construction of the Carmelite monastery, whose library united religion, philosophy, medicine, and history.
In 1622, the Spanish Crown elevated La Grua Talamanca to the title of Prince of Carini. Several members served as praetors of Palermo, deputies of the Sicilian Kingdom, and royal advisors. After the abolition of feudalism in 1812, the castle remained in the family’s possession; Antonio Francesco moved his residence to Paris in 1839. Today, the restored castle combines Norman walls, Renaissance comforts, and Baroque additions. It preserves the memory of a dynasty that permanently shaped the Carini’s cityscape, churches, and social life.
