Family history of Duke of Armansperg
Family history of Duke of Armansperg
The noble family „Armansperg“ was first mentioned in documents in 1221 with Wernhardus and Wernherus frateres de Armansberge. The lineage began with the knight Sybotto Armansperger in the 13th century. Hanns Sigmund von Armansperg sold the Hofmark Armansberg in 1588 to Peter von der Gilgen and established himself in Schönberg, Oberbrunn and other places in Lower Bavaria. The family remained resident in this region until the end of the 16th century.
In the 18th century Georg von Armansperg was granted the title of Freiherr, and in 1790 his grandson, Joseph Felix von Armansperg, was elevated to the rank of Count. He played an important role in Bavaria and Greece. The older line ended in 1853, while the younger one continues to this day.
The family's possessions extended over Egg, Loham, Schönberg, Oberbrunn and other areas. In 1792 Franz Xaver Ignatz Joseph von Armansberg consolidated Egg and Loham into a fiefdom. The family was also active in political and social affairs in the 19th century. Joseph Ludwig von Armansperg, a Bavarian member of parliament and minister, led the family into the 20th century.
The female line of succession brought Egg and Schloss Loham to Princess Cantacuzene in the mid-19th century; she was a born Countess Sophie von Armansperg. This ended the line of Armansperg on these castles.
