Family history Prince of Brunswick

Family history Prince of Brunswick

The Brunones were a Saxon noble family of the 10th and 11th centuries, based in the region of Brunswick (then Brunesguik) and named after the city. Their origins can be traced back to a Count Brun, who gave the family its name. The family presumably descended from the Frankish Liudolfingers, to whom the Ottonian royal house also belonged, and was therefore related to the Saxon monarchy.

The Brunones held the hereditary title of Count of Brunswick (Comes de Brunesguik), but also served as counts in the Derlingau, the North Thuringia region, and other Saxon counties. Due to their close connection to the Ottonian-Salic Kingdom, they exerted great influence in eastern Saxony. They owned extensive estates and fiefs, including important transport and trade routes.

Especially noteworthy is Ekbert I of Brunswick, who played a central role as Reichsfürst under Emperor Henry II and later under Conrad II. His son, Ekbert II., was one of the leading opponents of Emperor Henry IV in the Investiture Controversy and was executed in 1086 – which ushered in the end of the Brunon political importance.

After the death of Edward II, the line died out in the male line. Parts of their possessions passed through inheritance to other noble families, especially the Billungs and later the Wettin dynasty, which made Brunswick their power base. The castle and city of Brunswick, originally fortified and expanded by the Brunones, was later converted into the residence of the Wettin Dukes.

The Brunones are considered one of the principal families of early medieval Lower Saxony’s noble class. Their influence on the development of the city of Braunschweig and their role in the early German Reich make them an important part of Saxon noble history.

Family coat of arms of Prince of Brunswick

Heraldic description: In red, two towering, staring golden lions with blue armor and a blue tongue are screaming at each other.

The red shield bears two gold leopards arranged one above the other. Both are moving and turn their heads towards the viewer. Blue claws and blue tongues create a clear contrast in color. A gilded edge encloses the shield.

Above the shield is a richly decorated chainmail helmet with a crown of princes. The composition is adorned with ornate acanthus leaves in bright red and deep gold. As a decorative element, a white column base with peacock feather tufts stands between two golden horns adorned with red hearts.
