Family history of the Prince of Carrión
In the 10th and 11th centuries, the Counts of Carrión were among the most important families of the Leon-Castilian nobility. In the fertile valley of the Carrión, they promoted the development of the roads for the numerous pilgrims on the Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela.
Monasteries, abbeys and generous hospices made the region a vibrant place of European exchange. Contemporary chronicles emphasize the festive culture, the promotion of music, and the heraldic splendor of the Carrión house.
The name stands for a cultural landscape of Castile, whose hospitality and farsightedness significantly influenced the medieval pilgrimage routes.
