Family history Barón de Entenza
The Barons of Entenza – From the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean
The history of Entença began in 1063 in Ribagorza. Knight Mir Gombau received the estate of Entença from Arnau Mir de Tost with the task of building a stone castle. From this strategic possession grew a prestigious lineage of the Crown of Aragon. Already Pere Mir ruled over several castles between Benabarre and the valley of the Noguera Ribagorzana.
In the 12th century the family split into two lines. The main line led to the Barony of Entenza, the second to Alcolea on the Cinca. Their members accompanied the kings in their expansion to the south. Gombau II. participated in the transfer of Valencia in 1238. Through his marriage to Alamanda de Santmartí, Falset, Móra, Tivissa, Marçà and Pratdip were added to the Entenza family. Now the world of the Entenza extended from the Pyrenees to the Ebro.
The house also left its mark in the Mediterranean. After Roger de Flors death, Berenguer de Entenza temporarily led the Catalan Company in the Byzantine Empire. His sister Saurina married Admiral Roger de Llúria. Guillem de Entenza served as a royal advisor, fought in Murcia and negotiated with Sicily.
Teresa de Entenza of the Alcolea line created a brilliant union. In 1314 she brought her possessions and the County of Urgell into marriage with the future King Alfonso IV. Her son Peter IV, the Ceremonious, ascended the throne in 1336.
Following an agreement with King James II in 1324, the main barony passed to the Crown and was assigned to the Prades family; Falset became its center. In 1425, through marriage, Prades and Entenza came into the possession of the Cardona family, later through their heiress to the Medinaceli family. Thus, the name continued to be passed through dynasties. Landscapes, castles, and archives today remind of a lineage that rose from a small border fortress to the royal court and Mediterranean politics.
