Family history of the Count of Tęczyn
Count of Tęczyn
The history of the Tęczyński house begins in medieval Poland with the Topór knightly family. The first securely documented pioneer is Nawój von Morawica, Castellan of Kraków. At the beginning of the 14th century, he built a fortified seat on a steep volcanic hill west of Kraków. The oldest tower of the later castle of Tenczyn still bears his name to this day.
His son Andrzej built the first stone Gothic castle between 1331 and 1361 and took the name Tęczyński as the first. As voivode of Kraków, he was part of the closest inner circle of the Kingdom. His descendants further expanded this rank through royal service, wise marriages, and growing land holdings. The family coat of arms featured the old sword of Topór.
In the 15th century, members of the House accompanied the Jagiellon dynasty in diplomacy and war. After the Battle of Grunwald, distinguished prisoners of the German Order were temporarily housed in Tenczyn. Andrzej Tęczyński linked the family through his marriage to Anna von Goraj with further significant possessions, while other branches founded new houses such as the Ossoliński family.
The Renaissance brought special splendor to the court. Jan Tęczyński transformed the medieval fortress into a magnificent residence with arcaded courtyards and modern fortifications. Poets such as Mikołaj Rej and Jan Kochanowski were guests there. Family members held offices as castellans, voivodes, court marshals, and diplomats; their connections extended to the courts of Sweden and other European powers.
At the beginning of the 17th century, Jan Magnus Tęczyński united the family estate once again in one hand. After his death, his daughter Izabela brought the inheritance into marriage with Łukasz Opaliński. With this, the castle and the estates entered a new, closely related family history. The impressive walls of Tenczyn still evoke three centuries of political creativity, cultural openness, and representative architecture.
