Family history Baron von Halicz
Baron von Halicz – The History of the Halicz House
The history of the Halicz family leads us into the vibrant world of princes in the medieval Rus. Its roots lay in the widely dispersed lineage of the Rurikids, more precisely in that line that traced back to Prince Rostyslaw Volodymyrych. His descendants gained firm ground in the late 11th century on the western trade routes between the Carpathians, the Dniester and the Vistula basin. Especially the principalities of Peremyshl, Terebowlja and Swenigorod became strongholds of their rule.
The decisive step was taken by Volodymyrko Wolodarowytsch. He united several family estates and elevated Halicz to his residence in 1144. The conveniently located city henceforth gave a whole principality its name. From there, the house maintained relations with Poland, Hungary, Byzantium and other countries of the Rus. Salt trade, fertile soil and important transport routes gave the court weight and opened the way for an independent policy.
Under Jaroslaw Osmomysl, who ruled from 1153 to 1187, Halicz reached its most glorious era. The epithet Osmomysl – literally „the eight-fold wise man“ – reflects the reputation of a skilled ruler. Chronicles describe a prince whose influence extended as far as the Danube. Churches, fortified places, and a self-confident Bojaran state shaped the land; at the same time, the court became a meeting place for various cultural traditions.
Jarosław’s son Volodymyr continued the rule until 1199. After that, the political legacy of the family passed to Roman Mstislawich of Volhynia, who connected Halicz with Volhynia. Thus, the building work of the house continued in a larger realm, which gained special prominence under Prince Danylo. The name Halicz thus remained associated with princely culture, clever diplomacy, and the unifying position between East and West for generations.

Family coat of arms Baron von Halicz
The depiction follows the medieval territorial emblem of the Halich region: the crowned black raven or the dove in the silver field.
In silver a black, gold-decorated dove with outstretched wings, on its head a small golden open crown. Above the shield a Polish baron's crown and a steel tournament helmet with black-silver covers; as a helmet ornament the crowned black dove with outstretched wings.
The name Halicz is traditionally associated with the East Slavic word for "dohl". The crowned black raven appears as a historical symbol of the Halicz land in Polish and Ruthenian coat of arms depictions and later became part of the Galician territorial heraldry.
