Family history Count of Egmont
Graaf van Egmont – The history of the Egmont House
The House of Egmont was built in the medieval Kennemerland region on the northern Dutch coast. Its early lords were closely associated with the famous abbey of Egmond as guardians of the castle. Near the monastery they built their castle „Slot op den Hoef“, which was repeatedly rebuilt after fires. After 1321 Jan van Egmond generously rebuilt it and made it the visible center of a growing family power.
In the service of the Counts of Holland, the Egmonts gained offices, land, and influence. They married into leading houses of the Netherlands and divided themselves into several lines. One branch produced Arnold van Egmont, who became Duke of Geldern in 1423. The main lineage remained dominant in Holland: Jan III served as governor of Holland, Zeeland, and Westfriesland. Emperor Maximilian elevated him to the rank of Count of Egmont in 1486; in 1491 he became a Knight of the Golden Fleece.
The most famous figure was Lamoraal van Egmont, born in 1522. As a commander of the armies of Charles V and Philip II, he achieved brilliant victories at Saint-Quentin and Gravelines. He became governor of Flanders and Artois, Knight of the Golden Fleece and in 1553 Prince of Gavere. At the same time, he and other Dutch magnates advocated for a more moderate government and against religious intolerance. Duke Alba had him arrested in 1567; his execution with the Count of Hoorn on June 5, 1568, shook Europe and became a powerful symbol of the Dutch rebellion.
Lamoraal's children continued the house in the southern Netherlands. His son Lamoraal II. and later counts preserved the titles of Egmont and Gavere, while the political circumstances fundamentally changed. With Procope François ended the male line of counts in 1707; the dynastic inheritance continued through Maria Clara Angelica and related lines. Castle foundations in Egmond, monuments in Zottegem, as well as Goethe's drama and Beethoven's music keep the name alive to this day.

Historical coat of arms of the House of Egmont.
Twelve in pairs, divided by gold and red.
The gold-red sparrenschild is the traditional coat of arms of the House of Egmont. Later members added extensive variants to the coat of arms, including additional symbols of authority; for the project title, the older, clearly recognizable form of the coat of arms is deliberately used.
