Family history Duca di Ferrara
The Dukes of Ferrara – The Stage of the Este
The Este family originated from the Obertenghi and has been named after the castle of Este near Padua since the 11th century. Margrave Alberto Azzo II. extended his connections beyond Italy; from his son Welf IV. the German House of the House of Este derived its lineage. The Italian line turned towards the Po. Azzo VI. and Azzo VII. gained influence in Ferrara in the 13th century, while Obizzo II. took over the city government permanently in 1264 and later conquered Modena and Reggio.
Under Niccolò II., the Castello Estense was built from 1385 onwards. Alberto V. obtained the founding of the university in 1391, and Niccolò III. made the court a political meeting place. His sons Leonello and Borso transformed Ferrara into a center of humanism. Borso received the title of Duke of Modena and Reggio from the Emperor in 1452; in 1471 Pope Paul II elevated him to Duke of Ferrara.
The great flowering came with Ercole I. He commissioned Biagio Rossetti to build the Addizione Erculea, an urban expansion with straight streets, palaces, and gardens. Ferrara thus became a model of meticulous Renaissance urban planning. Ercole's wife Eleonora of Aragon presided over a magnificent court; the daughters Isabella and Beatrice later shaped Mantua and Milan.
Alfonso I., husband of Lucrezia Borgia, defended the duchy with skill and artillery. Ludovico Ariosto and later Torquato Tasso, musicians, painters and scholars, gave the court a European reputation. Ercole II. and Alfonso II. continued this tradition.
After Alfonso II., his cousin Cesare d’Este took over in 1597. Since the Pope did not recognize his inheritance of the papal fief of Ferrara, Cesare moved to Modena in 1598 with his court, archives, and collections. There the Este family continued to rule; the House of Austria-Este was founded by Maria Beatrice d’Este. Ferrara preserves the legacy of the dynasty with its castle, palaces, city walls, and the Po River landscape. Since 1995, the Renaissance city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
