Family history Scherif from Mecca

The scribes of Mecca – The Hashemitic House

The title "Shirif" referred in Mecca primarily to the descendants of Hassan, one of the grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad. From these widely dispersed Hashemitic families emerged the rulers of the holy city since the 10th century. They oversaw Mecca, regulated the affairs of the pilgrims, and provided water, security, and routes during the Hajj.

A particularly persistent line began in 1201 with Qatada ibn Idris. His descendants, often called Qatadids after him, formed the emirs and grand sherifs of Mecca for over seven centuries. Their position required diplomatic skill: Egyptian Mamluks, later the Ottoman Sultans, claimed supremacy over the Hadschas, while the sherifs on the ground preserved their hereditary authority, their tribal connections, and the administration of the shrines. Within the house several branches emerged, including Dhawu Zayd and Dhawu Awn.

From the branch of Dhawu Awn came Hussein ibn Ali. Sultan Abdülhamid II appointed him in 1908 as Sherif and Emir of Mecca. During the First World War, Hussein led the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1916 and subsequently assumed the title of King in Hadscha. His sons Ali, Abdullah and Faisal assumed important roles: Ali succeeded in Hadscha, Abdullah founded the Emirate of Transjordan in 1921, and Faisal became first King of Syria, then of Iraq.

In 1925, the rule in Hudscha passed to Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud. However, the family history continued in new states. The Iraqi royal line lasted until 1958; in Jordan, King Abdullah I was succeeded by Talal, Hussein, and in 1999 by Abdullah II. The Jordanian royal house still bears the name Haschemiten and maintains its historical responsibility for Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. Thus, the long tradition of the scribes of Mecca became a visible political and cultural legacy that still exists today.

Family coat of arms Scherif of Mecca

The design is attributed to the Hashemitic House of the Great Scribes of Mecca. The eagle, the Hashemitic crown, and the colors black, white, green, and red follow the dynastic imagery of the Hedscha and the Hashemitic royal house.

In red, a black eagle with outstretched wings; above its head a small golden Hashemitic crown; on its chest a shield with black, silver, and green horizontal fields and a red triangle; above the head shield a gold-red strip crown.

Descendants of Hasan have been the scribes of Mecca since the Middle Ages. The Qatadi branch of Dhawu Awn produced Hussein ibn Ali, who led the Arab Revolt in 1916; from his sons came the ruling houses of Hadscha, Iraq, and Jordan.
