Family history Effendi by Janina
The family of Janina – The Tepedelenli house
The most famous ruling family of the Ottoman Janina originated from Tepelena in present-day Albania. Already Ali Pasha’s grandfather Muhtar and his father Veli held the title of Bey and belonged to the regional leadership. After Veli’s early death, his energetic wife Hamko preserved the family’s claim. Her son Ali, born around 1740, regained lost possessions and rapidly rose in the Ottoman military and administrative service.
In 1788 the Sultan appointed him as the Pasha of Janina, today's Ioannina. Ali built an almost princely court there. Through campaigns, alliances and skilful diplomacy, he brought large parts of Epirus, Albania, Thessaly and Western Greece under his influence. He maintained contacts with Napoleon, Great Britain and Russia; travelers like Lord Byron made the „lions of Janina“ famous throughout Europe.
Under him, Janina experienced economic and cultural prosperity. Streets became safer, trade and crafts flourished, and Greek schools and merchants profited from the vibrant city. At the same time, Ali ruled harshly: opponents and rebellious communities experienced violence, taxation, and expropriations. It was this mix of modernization, personal ambition, and strict power exercise that shaped his contradictory image.
Ali closely integrated his family into the rule. His eldest son Muhtar administered territories as far as the Gulf of Corinth and at times Ohrid; his son Veli ruled Trikala and later the Morea. Both married daughters of the powerful Ibrahim Pasha of Berat. The younger son Salih also received offices; several grandchildren were prepared early on for a political career.
When Sultan Mahmud II pushed back the independent provincial rulers, Ali was deposed in 1820. After a long siege, his center of power fell in 1822; his sons and grandsons soon lost their offices and their lives. Palaces, mosques, fortifications, and numerous stories still preserve the extraordinary family era in Ioannina and Tepelena to this day.

Family coat of arms Effendi von Janina
This Coat of arms refers to the dynastic symbol described by Janina for Ali Pascha: a lion in a red field protecting three young lions. The turban and the official arms place the depiction within the Ottoman hierarchy and visual tradition.
In red is a seated golden lion, with three golden young lions protecting its front paws. Above the shield is an Ottoman Pasha turban; behind the shield is a curved sword and a ceremonial spear crossed in a diagonal line. The shield is surrounded by golden vines adorned with red and green flowers.
Ali Pascha of Janina dominated from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
