Family history Hou of Jin
Marquis of Jin
The history of the Jin ruling dynasty begins at the beginning of the Zhou period. King Cheng transferred an area in the valley of the Fen River, in present-day Shanxi, to his younger brother Tang Shuyu. Shuyu's son Xie named the land Jin and continued the lineage as Marquis. Since the family descended from the Zhou royal family, they bore the old family name Ji like this.
As early as the 8th century BC, Marquis Wen played a brilliant role. When the western center of the Zhou was shaken, he supported King Ping and helped the transition to the eastern capital of Luoyi. Thus, Jin soon proved to be a reliable pillar of the royal order.
After internal family disputes, Duke Wu united the two lines of the country in the 7th century BC. Shortly thereafter, the house’s most famous episode began: Prince Chong’er spent many years traveling and meeting courtiers, alliances, and people. In 636 BC, he returned and ruled as Duke Wen. With the wise selection of his advisors and the victory at Chengpu, he led Jin to the top of the princely world. The Zhou king honored him as the hegemon.
His successors also kept Jin a significant power for a long time. Major noble families such as Zhao, Wei, and Han increasingly assumed responsibilities in the military and administration. Eventually, these followers became independent political entities. In 403 BC, the Zhou king recognized their leaders as their own regional princes; Jin gradually integrated them into the three successor states of Han, Zhao, and Wei.
The Ji family left an impressive legacy. Over many generations, they combined royal lineage, flexible alliance politics, and a remarkable ability to innovate. The stories of Margrave Wen and Duke Wen made Jin a symbol of loyalty, perseverance, and the successful reinvention of life after difficult years.

Jin was a major state of the Zhou period. The preserved Jinhou-Su bells are directly linked to a historical governor of Jin; a European Wappensystem did not exist.
