Family history Agha of Saloniki
The family of Saloniki – The Evrenosoğlu house
With the history of Ottoman Saloniki, hardly any early noble family is as closely connected as the Evrenosoğlu family. Their patriarch Gazi Evrenos Bey appears in the 14th century as a border commander and military leader. After the Ottoman victory at the Mariza in 1371, he led campaigns through Thrace and Macedonia. Serres was initially their center; during the long siege that led to the first capture of Saloniki in 1387, he fought alongside Çandarlı Hayreddin Paschas.
Evrenos settled in Yenice-i Vardar, about fifty kilometers west of Saloniki. The small town became a vibrant military and cultural center. Mosques, imaret, medrese, baths, caravanserai, and markets served travelers, scholars, and residents. Such foundations linked the family’s fame with hospitality and urban development.
His sons Ali, Isa, Barak and other relatives continued this tradition. Ali Bey led the border cavalry on campaigns in Albania, Hungary and Wallachia. Isa Bey served as Sandschakbey and played an important role during the battles for Berat. Barak Bey promoted Yenişehir in Thessaly with an imaret, a caravanserai and numerous shops. Grandchildren such as Şemseddin Ahmed Bey founded new religious and social institutions in Yenice; one Certificate of 1498 secured their maintenance.
The Evrenosoğlu family thus belonged not only to the military elite of Rumelia. Over generations, they managed land, foundations, and regional offices between Saloniki, Yenice, Thessaly, and Albania. With the stronger centralization of the Ottoman Empire, their position gradually shifted from being a nearly hereditary border house to being an esteemed family in provincial service.
Wars and political changes of the 20th century ended their local leadership role. However, their name remained preserved in Urkundethe buildings. The restored Mausoleum of Gazi Evrenos in Giannitsa today commemorates a family that visibly shaped Macedonia’s early Ottoman era over the centuries.

Family coat of arms Agha of Saloniki
The emblem combines the Ottoman crescent with the traditional symbols of the Agha and the early Ottoman border fighters in Rumelia. Composite bows, crossbows and spears stand for the military task; the fortified gate indicates Saloniki as an important garrison and port city.
At the top in green is a silver crescent moon; below is a golden Ottoman composite bow over a jagged golden sickle and a golden spear; at the base of the shield is a silver, golden-colored fortified gate with two towers; above the shield is an Ottoman Agha turban surrounded by golden Balkan Ottoman floral tendrils.
Saloniki had been so since the late 14th century and finally since the early 15th.
