Family history Baron of Callendar

Baron of Callendar

The history of Callendar begins in Falkirk, where a family named the name of their lands. Malcolm de Callendar received the estate in the 13th century. When Patrick de Callendar supported Edward Balliol in the 14th century, King David II granted the possession to Sir William Livingstone. His marriage to Christian Callendar, Patrick’s daughter and heir, linked the two family histories.

The Livingstones made Callendar their headquarters for four centuries. In the 15th century, Sir Alexander Livingstone became the guardian of King James II. His descendants remained closely connected to the royal family. Callendar House, at that time a fortified structure, hosted Maria Stuart several times; family members accompanied and cared for the young queen.

Alexander, the seventh Lord Livingstone, together with his wife Eleanor Hay, cared for the children of James VI. For these services, he was raised to the title of Earl of Linlithgow in 1600. His younger son, Sir James Livingstone, followed a brilliant military career. He served in the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden before returning to Scotland. In 1633 he became Lord Livingstone of Almond; in 1634, King Callendar and adjacent estates were combined into a free barony. In 1641, he became Earl of Callendar.

Since James had no children, a new grant arranged the succession within the family. Through his nephews, the titles of Callendar and Linlithgow were united in 1695. James, fourth Earl of Callendar, supported the Jacobite uprising in 1715 and spent his later years on the continent. The estate subsequently changed hands several times and ended up in 1783 with the merchant William Forbes.

Callendar House was later expanded and taken over by Falkirk in the 20th century. Today, the restored house in the middle of the park tells the story of the Livingstones, royal guests and a baronage whose history intertwined with great events in Scotland over many generations.

Family coat of arms Baron of Callendar

The depiction combines the Coat of arms Livingston and Callendar figures in the historically preserved shield engraving.

Quartered: Field one and four in silver; three red five-leaf clovers within a green double lily border; field two and three in black; a golden diagonal bar between six golden shingles; above the baron's crown and helmet a natural savage man with a spear and a snake; the ceiling is green-silver and black-golden.

Through the connection of the Livingstones with the heir of Callendar, both were Coat of arms united. The gentry of the Shield was led by the Lords and Earls of Callendar.
