Family history of Knjas of Chernigov
Prince of Tschernigow
The history of the princes of Chernigov is one of the great family narratives of medieval Rus. The city received its first glorious center in 1024 under Mstislaw the Brave, a son of Vladimir the Great. He ruled the territories east of the Dnieper and promoted church building, crafts, and chronicles. Chernigov grew into one of the most important cities in Europe.
The permanent princely line began in 1054 with Swjatoslaw Jaroslawich, a son of Jaroslaw the Wise of the House of Rurikids. His descendants made Chernigov the center of a vast territory that extended from the Dnieper to areas on the Oka and Don rivers. Several grand princes of Kiev came from this family.
Oleg Swiatoslawich was particularly influential; after that his descendants were called Olgowitschi. In 1094 he regained Chernigov for the family. At the Prince's Day of Lyubets in 1097, the possession of his relatives was confirmed. From here the house branched out to Nowgorod-Sewerski, Murom, Ryazan and into numerous smaller principalities. This created a vibrant network of related estates that shaped the politics and culture of Rus over generations.
In the 12th century, princes such as Vsevolod Olegovich and Svyatoslav Wsevolodovich also ruled in Kiev for a time. The court of Chernigov promoted stone churches, painting, and the written tradition. The adventures of related princes even found their way into the famous Igor song.
The Mongol invasion of 1239 fundamentally changed the political landscape. Prince Mikhail Wsevolodovich was later revered as a saint, while his descendants laid the foundations for new lines in Brjansk and the upper Oka region. In the 14th century, Chernigov came under the influence of Lithuania. However, the Olgovichs continued to live in numerous princely houses and carried on the Rurikid legacy well into the modern era. Cathedrals and chronicles still preserve their impressive history.
