Family history Lord of Douglas

Lord of Douglas

The history of the Douglases begins in the 12th century in the valley of Douglas Water in Lanarkshire. From this regional manor house a family developed, whose name soon spread throughout Scotland. Their great rise was thanks to Sir James Douglas, the close companion of King Robert Bruce. As a brave commander, he fought in the Scottish Wars of Independence and stood by Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314. Later generations remembered him as „Good Sir James“ – his opponents respectfully called him the „Black Douglas“.

After Bruce's death, James carried the King's heart on a journey to the Holy Land. In 1330 he fell at Teba, but his reputation made the red heart in the family coat of arms a recognizable symbol. His nephew William received the title of Earl of Douglas in 1358. Under Archibald „the Grim“, Lord of Galloway and third Earl, the house achieved new power. He built the impressive castle of Threave on an island in the River Dee, from which the later so-called Black Douglases administered large areas.

In the 15th century, the Douglases were at times the most important magnates of the kingdom. However, their strength led to tensions with James II. After dramatic confrontations and the siege of Threaves in 1455, the older branch of the family lost its political prominence. Now emerged the line of Earls of Angus known as the Red Douglases. Archibald „Bell-the-Cat“ shaped the politics of his time; his descendant Archibald, the sixth Earl, married Margaret Tudor. Through their daughter Margaret Douglas, the family lineage led to King James VI of Scotland and I of England.

From the sprawling house later emerged the lines Douglas-Hamilton, Queensberry, Morton and Selkirk. Castles like Threave and Tantallon, ancient seals and the crowned heart still preserve the memory of a family that accompanied Scotland’s history with courage, diplomacy and remarkable adaptability.

Family coat of arms Lord of Douglas

The design uses the classic design Coat of arms of the Douglas house with a heart and three stars.

In silver a red heart, elevated by a red open crown; in the blue shieldhead three silver five-pointed stars. Above the baron's crown and helmet a crowned red heart between two wings; the covers are blue-silver and red-silver.

The stars are among the oldest Douglas symbols. The heart is reminiscent of Sir James Douglas and his assignment to wear the heart of Robert Bruce.
