Family history Principe de Visconti
Prince of Visconti
The project title „Principe de Visconti“ refers to the famous Milanese house Visconti. Historically, the family ruled as lords and later as counts of Milan; not all members of the family held the unified title „Principe de Visconti“. Their documented history begins in the 11th century. The name probably refers to the office of a vizier, while Coat of arms the snake, the Biscione, became one of the most famous symbols of Italy.
In 1277 Archbishop Ottone Visconti defeated the rival della Torre at Desio and opened the way for his family to rule over Milan. His great-nephew Matteo I strengthened his power through skillful alliances. In the 14th century, Azzone, Luchino and Giovanni Visconti expanded their territory over large parts of northern Italy. Their courts promoted administration, architecture and literature; even Petrarca temporarily resided in the Visconti-ruled Milan.
Gian Galeazzo Visconti led the dynasty to its peak. In 1395 he acquired the duchy from King Wenceslas, commissioned major projects such as the Milan Cathedral and the Certosa di Pavia, and created a territory that extended from Piedmont to central Italy. After his death in 1402, this structure proved difficult to maintain.
The last reigning duke from the main line, Filippo Maria Visconti, died in 1447. Milan initially declared the Ambrosian Republic. In 1450, Francesco Sforza, who was married to Filippo's daughter Bianca Maria Visconti, took over the duchy. In this way, name, Wappenmotives, and dynastic prestige passed on to the new ruling family.
Numerous lines of the Visconti continued to exist. Castles, manuscripts, churches, and the Biscione in the cityscape still tell the story of a family that led Milan from a commune to a brilliant period of Renaissance rule.
