Family history Chevalier de Boulogne
Knight of Boulogne
The project title „Chevalier de Boulogne“ refers to a family that in the Middle Ages did not appear as mere knights but as counts of Boulogne. Their castle and the fortified port city were located on a strategic coast from which England, Flanders and northern France could almost be seen in a glance.
In the 11th century, Count Eustach I brought the house into the spotlight of history. His son Eustach II maintained relations with the great courts of his time and fought on the side of William the Conqueror at Hastings in 1066. On the tapestry in Bayeux, we see Eustachius encouraging the Norman duke at the crucial moment – a vivid scene that fits well with the family’s spirit of action.
The sons of Eustace II and his wife Ida of Lothringen became even more famous. Gottfried von Bouillon, Eustace III and Balduin marched east with the First Crusade in 1096. After the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099, Gottfried was elected protector of the Holy Sepulchre; Balduin followed him as the first King of Jerusalem. Eustace III returned to Boulogne, married Mary of Scotland and continued to rule the county.
With her daughter Mathilde, the story took an English twist. She married Stephen of Blois, who became King of England in 1135. During the subsequent struggles for the throne, Mathilde emerged as a wise mediator and determined organizer. Through her descendants and later inheritance connections, Boulogne passed to other houses, including Blois, Dammartin, and Auvergne.
The old count's name remained associated with ports, crusades, and royal connections. The walls of Boulogne and the stories about Gottfried preserve the memory of a family whose paths led from the canal coast to Jerusalem.
