Family history Marquis de Bourbon
Marquis of Bourbon
The project title „Marquis de Bourbon“ refers to a lineage whose historical rank extended far beyond that of a Margrave. The house received its name from the Bourbon-l’Archambault family in present-day central France. The older family of the Lords of Bourbon had dominated the region since the early Middle Ages; in 1272, the line of the Bourbons from the royal house of the Capetians began with the marriage of the heiress Beatrix of Burgundy-Bourbon to Robert of Clermont.
Robert was a son of King Louis IX. His son Louis I was elevated to the title of Duke of Bourbon in 1327 and made Moulins the center of a growing power. The family soon branched into several lines, including Bourbon, Vendôme, and Montpensier. It produced military leaders, court officials, and church dignitaries, while remaining closely connected to the French Crown.
When the older ducal line lost its possessions in the 16th century, the Bourbon-Vendôme line gained in importance. Antoine de Bourbon married Jeanne d’Albret, Queen of Navarre. Her son Henry of Navarre ascended the French throne in 1589 as Henry IV. With courage, political skill, and the Edict of Nantes, he led the country, exhausted by religious wars, into calmer years.
Under his descendants, France became a major European power. Louis XIII, together with Richelieu, strengthened the royal administration; Louis XIV combined Versailles with art promotion and a particularly impressive court ceremony. Bourbon lines later also ruled in Spain, Naples, Sicily, and Parma. In France, their immediate rule as kings ended in the 19th century, while other branches continued.
The history of the Bourbons thus spans from a castle in the Bourbonnais to several European thrones. Castles, archives, portraits, and still-living family branches all bear witness to their extraordinary ability to re-enter Europe’s history time and again over the centuries.
