Vicomte de Turenne – The History of the Lords of Turenne
High above the valleys of Corrèze, the Vizegrafship of Turenne was established in the Middle Ages. Its castle controlled the routes between Limousin, Quercy and Périgord. Since the 10th century, the lordship has been associated with the House of Comborn. Its viceroys took part in crusades, founded monasteries and built a closed territory. They skillfully used the rivalry between French and English kings to secure liberties.
Turenne almost developed into a small state. The vicomtes held assembly meetings, collected taxes, minted coins, and granted noble privileges. After Raymond VII., his daughter Marguerite brought the rule to an end in the early 14th century with Bernard VIII. de Comminges. Their descendants ruled Turenne until 1350; then Guillaume Roger de Beaufort, a nephew of Pope Clement VI., acquired the viceroyship and married Aliénor de Comminges.
The Beaufort era linked Turenne to the papal city of Avignon. Raymond de Turenne became famous in the wars of Provence. Through Anne de Beaufort and her marriage to Anne IV de La Tour, the inheritance passed to La Tour d’Auvergne in 1444.
This family brought Turenne to new glory. Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne fought alongside Henry IV, became Duke of Bouillon and Prince of Sedan. His son Henri, born in 1611, made the title famous worldwide: as „Grand Turenne“, he became Marshal of France and one of the most respected field commanders of the 17th century. His calm leadership and agility shaped the art of war of his era.
In 1738, Charles Godefroy de La Tour d’Auvergne sold the viceroyalty for 4.2 million livres to Louis XV.; his special rights thus became part of the Crown domain. The duke was allowed to continue using the names and titles. The castle towers, archives of Corrèze, and the fame of the Marshal preserve the multifaceted history of Turenne to this day.
