Family history Viscount of Buttevant

Viscount of Buttevant – The History of the House of Barry

The history of Buttevant begins with the house of Barry, which came to Ireland in the 12th century. The family traced its name back to possessions in Wales and gained a firm foothold in Munster under Philip de Barry. In the east of County Cork, manors came into being known as Barrymore and Barryroe. Barryscourt, whose early estate was built around 1206, became the family seat.

The Barrys adapted to their Irish environment. They formed marriages with the MacCarthys and the Roches, spoke both Irish and English, and promoted church institutions. In Buttevant – Irish Cill na Mullach – they supported a Franciscan monastery whose church tells the story of the importance of the medieval town. The title Lord Barry has been in use since the 13th century and was one of the oldest titles in the Irish nobility.

In 1541, John FitzJohn Barry was recognized as the first Viscount Buttevant. The title underscored the family's rank between Cork and Limerick. His cousin David FitzJames de Barry, the fifth Viscount, led the house through the Desmond rebellions. After alternating alliances, he regained royal confidence and claimed a large portion of the family's possessions.

A new highlight was achieved by David Barry, the sixth Viscount. Through his marriage to Alice Boyle, he linked the old house of Barry with an aspiring family of the 17th century. In 1628, they became both Earl and Countess of Barrymore. Castlelyons developed into a representative center; music, theater, and courtly entertainment shaped later generations.

The Graysons' lineage extended until 1824. Their property and family legacy continued particularly in the branch Smith-Barry, which was connected to Fota House in Cork. Thus, Buttevant remained part of an unusually long family history: from Norman origins through Irish monastic culture to elegant country seats of the modern era.

Family coat of arms Viscount of Buttevant

This Coat of arms corresponds to Coat of arms the historically documented lineage of the Irish family of de Barry, who held the titles Baron Barry and Viscount of Buttevant. Blazon.

The silver shield bears three pairs of narrow red crossbars that are clearly separated from each other. In total, six red lines appear, with each closely-packed pair of lines forming a heraldic twin bar. Above the shield is a dark tournament helmet with red-and-silver covers.

The Anglo-Norman family of de Barry was one of the important noble families in County Cork. Their members held the title of Baron Barry and later Viscount of Buttevant since the Middle Ages.
