Family history Marquês de Barbacena

Marquis of Barbacena

The history of the Caldeira Brant family combines European origins with Brazil’s rise to independent monarchy. According to the records of the State Archive of Minas Gerais, the Brazilian branch began with Jan van Brabant, who was born in Antwerp in 1643. As consul in Lisbon, he took the name João Caldeira Brant. His son Ambrósio moved to Brazil and founded a family that gained prestige in the mining, trade, and public life of Minas Gerais.

Felisberto Caldeira Brant Pontes de Oliveira e Horta was born in 1772 in Mariana. His grandfather was involved in the diamond trade, and his father owned gold mines. Felisberto studied at the Royal Naval Academies in Lisbon, and after serving in Angola he returned to Brazil to engage in trade in Bahia. His marriage to Ana Constança Guilhermina de Castro Cardoso united two influential families.

Felisberto’s greatest task occurred during the period of Brazilian independence. As a skilled ambassador in London, he negotiated international recognition and financial matters for the young empire. In 1825, Pedro I appointed him Visconde and in 1826 Marquês de Barbacena. Later, he served as Senator, Council of State, and Minister of Finance. Another glorious mission took him to Europe, where he mediated the Emperor’s marriage to Amélie of Leuchtenberg.

The next generation also remained connected to public life. His son Felisberto became Visconde de Barbacena and worked as a diplomat and politician; Pedro Caldeira Brant received the title Conde de Iguaçu and preserved the family history in genealogical records.

Letters, official documents and family papers make the Caldeira Brant today a particularly vivid chapter in Brazilian history. Its legacy tells of entrepreneurial spirit, diplomacy and the building of a new state between Minas Gerais, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Europe.
