Family history Marchese di Saluzzo
The Margraves of Saluzzo – A Alpine state full of ideas
The Margraves of Saluzzo came from the house of the Aleramids. Bonifacio del Vasto divided his possessions in western Liguria and Piedmont among his sons. Manfredo I received the land between the Po, the Alps, and the Stura and made Saluzzo the capital in the mid-12th century. A fortified residence with a castle, walls, and a market grew up from the town.
For nearly four centuries, the family claimed its position between Savoy, Montferrat, France, and the cities of Upper Italy. Manfredo II and his successors expanded their rights and possessions; Tommaso I strengthened administration in the 13th century. Despite wars and feuding, the house repeatedly regained its independence. Connections with France shaped court language, knightly culture, and diplomacy.
One of the colorful representatives was Tommaso III. During his captivity in Turin, he wrote around 1400 „Le Chevalier errant“, an allegorical work about chivalry, love, and power. His son Ludovico I. led a long period of peace. Under him and Ludovico II., Saluzzo reached its peak in the 15th century: trade and crafts flourished, churches and palaces were built, and artists found commissions.
From 1479 onwards, Ludovico II had the „Buco di Viso“ driven through Mount Viso. The first traffic tunnel through the Alps facilitated trade with Provence. His wife Marguerite de Foix then assumed the regency for her son Michele Antonio. In 1511, Saluzzo received its own bishopric – a sign of princely self-confidence.
Succession disputes and wars between France and the Habsburgs weakened the country. In 1548, the parliament of the Margraviate submitted to the French king; in 1601, Saluzzo came under Savoy under the peace of Lyon. Side branches of the family, including the counts of Paesana and Castellar, preserved names and archives. The Castiglia, Casa Cavassa, and Saluzzos’s fan-shaped old town today tells of a small state with an astonishingly wide horizon.
