Family history Conte di Spinola
Count of Spinola
The Spinola family is one of the major families of Genoa. Their history has been closely linked to the emerging maritime republic since the High Middle Ages. As early as the 12th century, Guido Spinola appears repeatedly as consul. In a city whose ships sailed as far as the eastern Mediterranean, the family combined political influence with trade, diplomacy, and a seafaring spirit of enterprise.
In the 13th century, the Spinola often held the leadership of the Ghibelline party, which supported the Emperor. Together with the Doria, they sometimes dominated the government of Genoa, while rivalries with other powerful houses were part of the everyday life of the Republic. From the widely dispersed lineage emerged lines in San Luca and Luccoli, as well as possessions outside Liguria. Individual branches received the titles of count, margrave, and prince; „Conte di Spinola“ is therefore to be understood as a general project name, not as a uniform title for the entire family.
Among the most famous members is Ambrogio Spinola. The general born in 1569 joined the Spanish service and became famous throughout Europe after the capture of Breda in 1625. Velázquez captured the surrender of the city in his painting „The surrender of Breda“ and gave an unexpected human face to the military success. Other Spinola members served as cardinals, admirals, diplomats and art collectors.
The Palaces of the family also tell their story. The Palazzo Spinola in Genoa preserves furniture, paintings, and the atmosphere of a large urban residence. Franco and Paolo Spinola donated the house and its collections to the Italian state in 1958; this formed the basis of the present-day National Gallery.
The family continues in several branches. Its name combines medieval councils, vast sea routes, Baroque art and modern cultural preservation – a remarkably vibrant chapter in the history of Genoa.
