Family history Clan Chief of Glencoe

Clan Chief of Glencoe

The MacDonalds of Glencoe are known in Gaelic as Clann Iain Abrach or MacIains. Their history leads to Iain Fraoch, „John of the Heath“, a younger son of Angus Óg MacDonald of Islay. Angus supported Robert the Bruce and fought at Bannockburn in 1314. In the early 14th century, Iain took over Glencoe; his descendants led the clan there for many generations.

The narrow valley surrounded by high mountains shaped their community. The MacIains lived in small settlements, kept black cattle, farmed the slopes and spoke the Gaelic language. The chief was not only a military leader but also a mediator, host and protector. As a branch of the Clan Donald, the Glencoe-MacDonalds also maintained a distinct independence. Alliances, feuds and herds of cattle were part of the world of the Western Highlands.

In the late 17th century, Chief Alasdair Ruadh MacIain pledged allegiance to King James VII. After his deposition, he was to pledge allegiance to William III until the New Year of 1692. Due to difficult winter travel and a trip to the wrong office, the relevant sheriff only accepted his oath on January 6th. Although MacIain had thus shown his willingness, government officials used the delay as an excuse.

On February 13, 1692, soldiers who had lived as guests in the valley for almost two weeks attacked their hosts. Chief Alasdair, his wife, and numerous members of the community lost their lives; many people managed to escape into the mountains. A parliamentary inquiry later described the events as „murder under trust,“ meaning murder committed in violation of the laws of hospitality.

The family and their descendants nevertheless preserved the names, traditions, and affiliation with Clan Donald. The 1883 monument in Glencoe commemorates Chief MacIain and the residents of the valley. Archaeological research, a reconstructed Thorfhütte, and worldwide clan connections today also tell of the everyday life, culture, and resilience of Clan Iain Abrach.

Family coat of arms Clan Chief of Glencoe

This Coat of arms follows the traditional Highland Heraldry of the MacIains of Glencoe as a branch of the Clan Donald.

Four: one in silver a red lion; two in gold a red hand with a red cross; three in gold a black highland galleon; four in green a silver salmon. Above the helmet is a armed hand with a black Sgian Dubh within an open green laurel wreath.

The MacIains were the Glencoe branch of the Clan Donald. Galeere and Crosshand refer to the Lords of the Isles; the Dolchhand is transmitted as a Glencoe helmet ornament.
