Family history Duca de Colonna
Duke of Colonna
The project title „Duca de Colonna“ refers to the Roman house of Colonna, although this was not a uniform historical title of the entire family. The first securely documented member is Pietro de Columna, who held possessions southeast of Rome around 1100. The name derived from the town of Colonna in the Albanian mountains. Soon the family became one of the most influential families in Rome.
In the Middle Ages, the Colonna family was in fierce competition with the Orsini family. Their castles in Palestrina, Paliano, and the Campagna provided them with a strong foundation, while family members rose to prominence as cardinals, military leaders, and senators. The conflict with Pope Boniface VIII led to the destruction of Palestrina in 1297, but the family regained its influence. Cardinal Oddone Colonna was elected Pope Martin V in 1417 and ended the Great Schism of the Western Church with his election. His return made Rome once again the central focus of the Papacy.
In the 16th century, Marcantonio II. Colonna acquired special fame. As a papal commander, he took part in the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571. His ceremonial entry into Rome was later immortalized in the magnificent gallery of the Palazzo Colonna. Further titles included the title of Prince of Paliano or Duke of Tagliacozzo; this explains the aristocratic elegance of the project title.
Over the centuries, the Colonna family combined politics with the promotion of the arts. Their Roman palace grew from medieval buildings into one of the most impressive private residences in the city. Paintings, archives, and family rooms were carefully preserved.
The Colonna House still stands today. Its history spans from fortified hilltop towns, a papal council and naval victories to an art collection that brings the family heritage to life in a friendly and visible way.
