Family history Tianzi has Jinyang
Emperor of Jìnyáng
The Chinese project title literally means „Heavenly Son from Jinyang“ and refers to the Li family, the founders of the Tang Dynasty. Jinyang, today’s Taiyuan in Shanxi, was the starting point of their rise in 617. Li Yuan, an experienced general and member of a northern Chinese noble family, initially served the Sui Dynasty as a governor. When their rule fell to civil unrest, he rose up with his sons and moved to Chang’an.
618 saw Li Yuan ascend the throne as Emperor Gaozu and founded the Tang Dynasty. His son Li Shimin proved to be an outstanding military commander. After internal family feuding, he succeeded Emperor Taizong in 626. His reign became a model of good governance: he listened to critical advisors, organized administration and justice, and secured the borders through diplomacy as well as military strength.
Under Taizong’s successors, the empire developed into a cosmopolitan center of Eurasia. Chang’an welcomed merchants, scholars, and religious communities along the Silk Roads. Empress Wu Zetian temporarily interrupted the dynastic succession and ruled herself; afterwards, the Li family continued the Tang rule. Under Emperor Xuanzong, poetry, music, and painting flourished, before the rebellion of An Lushan severely shook the empire in 755.
Despite later losses of power, Tang emperors held the throne until 907. After that, China entered the Five Dynasties era, but the family's cultural reputation remained exceptional.
The title „Tianzi cóng Jìnyáng“ was not an established official designation. However, as a poetic project name, it aptly recalls that the path of one of China’s most important imperial dynasties began in Jìnyáng—with a family whose era stands for openness to the world, art, and statecraft to this day.
