Family history Markgraf von Cameros
In the picturesque mountains of the Rioja, the Cameros dynasty experienced a remarkable cultural flowering since the 10th century. Located between Navarre and Castile, the family acted as a mediator between the two kingdoms.
The men and women of Cameros supported the Way of Saint James, built safe hostels for pilgrims, and strengthened the wool and pasture traditions of the High Tatras. Under their sponsorship, Cistercian monasteries were established where knowledge was preserved; at the same time, the region’s wine production gained in importance.
The history of Cameros combines reliability, wise management of the landscape, and a long cultural tradition.
