Family history Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo

The Markgrafs of San Miguel de Aguayo – A family on the northern border of New Spain

The roots of the house of San Miguel de Aguayo lay in northern Mexican possessions that had emerged around Parras and Patos since the late 16th century. Agriculture, livestock breeding, and mining made these estates a significant source of wealth. Agustín de Echeverz y Subiza, an officer and governor of Nuevo León, became the first Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo.

His daughter and heiress Ignacia Javiera de Echeverz married José de Azlor y Virto de Vera from the Aragonese nobility. This made José the second Marquis. The couple came to Mexico in 1712 and lived on the Hacienda Patos, whose lands encompassed a considerable portion of Coahuila. When French activities challenged Spain's claim to Texas, José offered to finance an expedition himself.

In 1719 he became governor and general captain of Coahuila and Texas. With men and herds of horses, cattle and sheep, he moved north in 1721. He had missions reconquered, strengthened presidios and ensured that Spain's position in Texas remained secure. From a presidio, Los Adaes developed; the mission of San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in San Antonio bears his name. In 1724 the king appointed him field marshal.

Ignacia Javier's daughter María Ignacia de Azlor also made a special impact. She used her wealth to educate girls and founded the Colegio de la Compañía de María in Mexico City, offering instruction regardless of origin or wealth.

Through the Echeverz and Valdivielso families, titles and possessions passed to subsequent generations. Debts and difficult administrative procedures led to the once vast estate shrinking to the point of insolvency in 1815 for Pedro Ignacio de Echeverz. The family nevertheless remained present genealogically. Missions, place names, and educational foundations still tell of their influential presence between Mexico and Texas.
